Manassas, Fredericksburg & Lakeridge VA, October 29, 2016— On October 29, Virginia Lawyers Weekly hosted an awards ceremony honoring several lawyers who have made significant accomplishments or achievements in their field, and two of these outstanding attorneys were our very own Kristina Keech Spitler, and Brett Callahan! The Leaders in the Law awards are given to attorneys who have demonstrated leadership in the practice of law, while striving to improve the justice system and make contributions to their community. This year, the organization also recognized Up and Coming Lawyers who are establishing a name for themselves by displaying drive, ambition, determination and a dedication to their work and their community. Brett received this award, and Kristina was awarded a Leader in the Law.
Profiles of the honorees were published in Virginia Lawyers Weekly’s “Leaders in the Law” special section, which was distributed at the event and inserted into the Nov. 2 edition of the paper. We’re proud of our wonderful attorneys who were featured in this publication, and in such a prominent way. Congratulations Kristina and Brett!
Manassas, Fredericksburg & Lakeridge VA, October 28, 2016-The law firm of Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian would like to congratulate Martin R. Crim, of VF&N and the Manassas City Attorney’s Office on the honor of receiving the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia 2016 Special Project Award.
According to the press release posted by The Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, the LGA “honored the LGA’s Sign Ordinance Committee with its 2016 Special Projects Award at its recently concluded annual fall conference in James City County. The Award recognizes members who have worked on a project of significant importance to the LGA or local government generally. Recognized for their participation were Tara McGee of Chesterfield County, William Macali of Virginia Beach, Martin Crim of Manassas, Anthony Williams of Winchester, Gregory Kamptner of Albemarle County, Adam Melita of Norfolk, and Alan Smith of Prince William County. The members of this Committee were tasked with reviewing the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 Reed v. Town of Gilbert decision which called into question the constitutionality of many local sign ordinances. The Sign Ordinance Committee analyzed the decision and its impacts on local sign regulations, advised LGA members of the legal and practical implications of the decision, and drafted a model sign ordinance that would be legally defensible in the wake of this decision. This Committee’s work assisted LGA members in providing the best and most up-to-date advice to local government officials.”
We are extremely proud of Martin and his hard work and dedication throughout the drafting of a model sign ordinance for the LGA Ad HOC Sign Ordinance Committee in the wake of Reed v. Town of Gilbert. Martin has demonstrated time and again why he is such an asset to Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian, as well as the city of Manassas, through his persistence and determination, while working with the professionalism and excellence that the attorneys at VF&N possess. We congratulate Martin on this very great recognition.

On the evening of September 20, 2016, Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian had the honor of sponsoring a historic event where the Old Dominion Bar Association, the Prince William County Bar Association, and the Prince William Chapter of the Virginia Women Attorneys Association came together to present a screening of the documentary “The Loving Story”. The film chronicles the lives and legal battle of Mildred and Richard Loving, a mixed race couple who were exiled from their home state of Virginia due to its law against interracial marriage. Due to the efforts of Kristina Keech Spitler, a shareholder at VF&N, this event combined members of all of the bar associations for a historic evening that brought the community together.
We were especially honored by the presence of Bernard S. Cohen, legal counsel to the Lovings, who fought and won their case in the Supreme Court of Virginia, eliminating the ban against the interracial marriage law. Bernard Cohen also has a special connection to our firm, as he is the father of Karen Cohen, one of our esteemed attorneys.
The Center for the Arts of Greater Manassas/Prince William County generously hosted the event, and it was packed with over 100 attendees, including Honorable Judge Gerald Bruce Lee, Mayor Hal Parrish, Senator Scott Surovell and many other esteemed members of the three associations.
Special thanks to Jirani Coffee House for providing food and beverages for purchase. This was certainly an evening to remember! Stay on the lookout for the Loving’s story coming to the big screen November 4, 2016 in the new movie “Loving”.
